Imagine a potential customer in Bhabua, Sasaram, Buxar, or Patna searching "coaching centre near me" or "electrician Kaimur" on Google. Even businesses near Varanasi and Chandauli rely on local SEO to get discovered across the border. Is your business showing up? If not — you're invisible to them, even if your shop is 500 metres away.
Local SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is the process of making your business appear in these local Google searches. The good news: most of these steps are free, and businesses in smaller cities like Kaimur have very little competition — meaning it's much easier to rank here than in Delhi or Mumbai.
Step 1: Create and Verify Your Google Business Profile
This is the single most important thing you can do. Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the listing that appears on Google Maps and in the sidebar when someone searches your business name.
To set it up:
- Go to business.google.com and sign in with a Google account
- Search for your business name — if it doesn't exist, click "Add your business"
- Enter your business name, category, address, phone number, and hours
- Verify your listing — Google will send a postcard or call your phone number
- Once verified, add photos, your website URL, and a description
Step 2: Get Google Reviews — And Respond to All of Them
Google reviews are one of the top local ranking factors. Businesses with more reviews (and higher ratings) consistently outrank businesses with fewer reviews, even if the competitor has been around longer.
How to get more reviews:
- After completing a project or service, send your customer a WhatsApp message with a direct link to leave a review
- Add a "Review us on Google" link to your website
- Train your staff to politely ask satisfied customers to leave a review
- Never buy fake reviews — Google will detect and penalise you
Equally important: respond to every review, positive and negative. A business that responds to reviews signals to Google that it's active and engaged.
Step 3: Make Sure Your NAP Is Consistent Everywhere
NAP stands for Name, Address, and Phone number. Google cross-checks your business information across the web. If your business name is slightly different on JustDial vs your website vs Google — it hurts your ranking.
Check and update your NAP on all platforms where your business appears:
- Google Business Profile
- JustDial
- Sulekha
- IndiaMART (if relevant)
- Your own website's contact page and footer
- Facebook/Instagram business profile
Use the exact same format everywhere. If your address is "Near SBI Bank, Bhabua Road, Kaimur" — use that exact string everywhere, not "Kaimur District" in one place and "Bhabua" in another.
Step 4: Add Location Keywords to Your Website
Your website should clearly tell Google where you are and what you do. Many business owners have a website but never mention their city or district — so Google doesn't know to show it for local searches.
Add your location to:
- Your page title (e.g., "Best Coaching Centre in Kaimur, Bihar")
- Your meta description
- Your H1 heading (the main headline on your homepage)
- Your about section and contact page
- Your footer (address with city and pin code)
Also create a dedicated page for each city or district you serve. If you serve both Kaimur and Sasaram, create separate pages — one targeting "service in Kaimur" and one targeting "service in Sasaram."
Step 5: Add Structured Data (Schema Markup) to Your Website
Schema markup is code that you add to your website to explicitly tell Google what type of business you are, where you're located, your phone number, and your hours. This helps Google understand your site and show rich results.
The minimum schema every local business should have is LocalBusiness schema, which includes:
- Business name
- Address
- Phone number
- Opening hours
- Geographic coordinates
If you're a KaimurTech client, we add this automatically to every website we build. If you have an existing website, ask your developer to add it, or use Google's Structured Data Markup Helper tool.
Step 6: List Your Business on Indian Directories
Getting listed on reputable Indian business directories creates "citations" — mentions of your NAP on other websites — which are a strong local ranking signal for Google.
Priority directories to list on (all free):
- JustDial — most important for India
- Sulekha — especially for service businesses
- IndiaMART — if you sell products B2B
- Bing Places for Business — free, takes 10 minutes
- Facebook Business — social signals matter
- Clutch.co — important for IT/tech companies
Step 7: Create Local Content on Your Website
Google rewards websites that create useful, locally-relevant content. A blog or news section with articles about topics relevant to your customers — and mentioning your city — is one of the most powerful long-term SEO strategies.
Content ideas for Bihar businesses:
- "Best [Service] in [Your City] — What to Look For"
- "How [Your Type of Business] Helped Local Businesses in Bihar"
- Case studies of local clients (with permission)
- Guides relevant to your industry and your region
You don't need to write long articles every week. Even 1–2 quality posts per month, consistently, will compound over time and bring in steady organic traffic.
How Long Will It Take to See Results?
| Action | Time to See Results |
|---|---|
| Google Business Profile created and verified | 1–2 weeks to appear on Maps |
| First 5 Google reviews collected | Ranking improvement in 2–4 weeks |
| NAP consistency fixed across directories | 4–8 weeks |
| Location keywords added to website | 4–12 weeks |
| Schema markup added | 2–6 weeks |
| Regular blog content (3+ months) | 3–6 months, then compounds |
SEO is not an overnight fix — but it is a compounding investment. The work you do today will bring you customers 6 months from now, and continue bringing them for years without additional cost.
Common Local SEO Mistakes Bihar Businesses Make
Mistake 1: Ignoring Google Business Profile After Setup
Many businesses create their Google Business Profile and then never touch it again. Google rewards profiles that are kept active — adding new photos, posting updates, responding to reviews. A dormant profile will slowly lose its ranking advantage over competitors who stay active.
Mistake 2: Using a Personal Phone Number Instead of a Business Number
Your NAP consistency depends on having a stable, permanent phone number. Using your personal mobile number works fine initially, but if you change your number — even once — it can break all the citations you've built across directories and hurt your ranking for months.
Mistake 3: Keyword Stuffing in the Business Name
Some businesses add keywords to their Google Business Profile name — like "Best Plumber Kaimur Bihar | Fast Service | 24x7" — to try to rank higher. This violates Google's guidelines and can get your listing suspended. Use your real business name only.
Mistake 4: Skipping the Website Entirely
Some business owners think a Google Business Profile is enough. It's not. A website dramatically increases your credibility and gives Google more content to index. Businesses with websites rank significantly higher in local search than those without.
Mistake 5: Not Asking for Reviews Until It's Too Late
The best time to ask for a review is right after a customer has had a good experience — within 24 hours. Waiting weeks or months means the customer has moved on and is far less likely to take the time. Make it a standard part of your follow-up process.
Local SEO by Business Type
Not all local SEO advice applies equally to every business. Here's what to focus on based on your type:
Coaching Centres and Schools
Prioritise Google reviews and parent testimonials. Create separate pages for each subject or course you offer, with location keywords in each. Publish blog content about exam preparation, board results, and career guidance — topics parents and students actively search for in Bihar.
Clinics, Doctors, and Pharmacies
Medical queries have very high search intent. Make sure your Google Business Profile lists your exact specialty and languages spoken (Hindi, Bhojpuri, etc.). Patient reviews are especially important here — people trust peer recommendations for healthcare more than any other sector.
Shops and Retailers
Add product keywords to your website alongside location. "Buy saree online Kaimur", "electronics shop Bhabua", "furniture Sasaram" — these are real searches with purchase intent. If you have a physical store, make sure your hours are always accurate on Google (update them for holidays).
Service Businesses (Electricians, Plumbers, Painters)
Service businesses benefit most from Google's "local pack" (the 3 business listings that appear at the top of local search results). To appear in this pack: complete your Google Business Profile fully, get at least 10 reviews, and add service areas explicitly in your profile settings.
IT, Software, and Technology Companies
List on Clutch.co, GoodFirms, and DesignRush — these are directories Google trusts for tech companies. Get client testimonials with specific project details (not generic praise). Create case study pages on your website with location and industry keywords.
